One Player is Impacting This Team Immediately

Moreso then in any other sport one player can impact a team or a program almost immediately.  Nowhere was that more apparent than for the only ACC program located in Old Dominion.  The Virginia Cavaliers won a huge recruiting battle last year for the services of home-grown big man Ralph Sampson and reeled in the benefits in his first year in Charlottesville.  An also ran for years, Coach Terry Holland has got this team thinking defense first and when you have a 7’ 4” Aircraft carrier guarding the rim it makes pressure man defense all the better.  Sampson is as gifted as they come in the middle with an almost equal amount of dexterity and touch to go with that size.  He can score but is not going to average 20 points a game as he easily could as the Cavs play a much slower tempo than the other teams in this league.

The Cavs Must Play Defense and Buy into the Process

The rest of the talent around the great big man are solid, role type players who all are that much better with Sampson around.  Senior Buzzy Wilkinson was once the star in Charlottesville but now will be part of a rotating group of players in the backcourt as he is not exactly a defensive specialist.  Buzzy can score though and will be counted on for offense either starting or off the bench.  Juniors Wally Walker at the three and Barry Parkhill at the point should start and both bring solid all-around games to the fray.  The key might be how well Seniors Scott McClandish and Herb Busch, Junior Marc Iavaroni and Sophomore Olden Polynice help take some of the pressure off Sampson down low as they switch in at the four.  All of these guys have size and give the Cavaliers an impressive inside game playing next to the phenomenon that is the slender giant.  Sampson is slight of build to say the least and these guys knoew they are here for muscle and their ability to defend and board. Polynice will probably get a few more minutes as he can help out offensively a little bit more then the other guys but all will play and their will be plenty of fouls to give to protect the golden goose.

The rest of the team is filled with upperclassmen who were nowhere near the level of talent of most of the ACC employs.  Seniors Bob McCarty, Chip Conner, Chip Case, Jim Connelly and hometown legend Tony Laquintino are in the mix for minutes in the back court but none of these Cavs are really point guards to back up Parkhill.  Sophomores Othell Wilson and Jeff Jones are coming up from JV looking for minutes but neither is going to challenge the much bigger (and better) Parkhill for the starting role.  Junior Gus Gerard is unique in that he can play anywhere up front (and probably will) with some size (6’8 200) and style.  This free spirit who came here from Allentown PA is a bit inconsistent but this team needs his athleticism up front and this kid can flat fly when he wants to.

The bench will get better this year as Holland found there was a slew of freshmen wanting to come aboard and play with the non long-haired bible named big man.  They do know, however, to come to Charlottesville they must be a defense first player and buy into the process Holland has put into place.  The Cavs are ranked in the top 25 preseason but this team will come and go on how far the big carrier can take them!
